The 8 Bits of Subcon - Super Mario Bros. 2 by GoshaDole The 8 Bits of Subcon - Super Mario Bros. 2 by GoshaDole
12x18 print of this available on my store here!… << PRINT PRINT!

So, I wanted to do a Mario piece... what better to do it on both one of my favorite Mario games and also one of my favorite games of all time! Super Mario Bros 2 (Doki Doki Panic). I get a little sad at how generic the Mario series has gotten over the years compared to the original games. I know its a bit of nostalgia, but I think a lot of passion/creativity is missing from Mario as of late. For this piece, I wanted to do a limited tone piece just set to the colors of the original NES/Famicom release of the game. There is something about keeping everything thing so limited that really made the world jump out to me.

I decided to call this the 8 Bits of Subcon since it represents a lot of the enemies found in the game, which are known as the 8 Bits. Subcon is the world the characters enter in the game. The background kind of mish-mashes the look of a few levels found in the game. Mario 2 is a very vertical-orientated game compared to others in the Mario series, so I wanted that to be reflected in the piece as well.

Anywho, hope you guys enjoy the piece! Be sure to check out the Radio Gosha Facebook page as well if you are into my stuff as I update it pretty frequently.

ahhh I just love this!
The funky designs, the use of depth in the space, the solid colors so reminding of the original *NES* 8 bit capacity ..oh God how stuff like this is what lil'kids in the world deserve as artwork in posters in their classes and books read to them by their teachers

You know, I never imagined what SMB 2's worlds would look like if you were looking up at them from above.
And it's great because, thinking about it, the levels really do go up this high like this! And the limited colors you used are awesome.

The Mario games do seem more generic these days, but to me the main reason it feels like that is because of The New Super Mario Bros. series. Were it not for that, then all that would be left making things generic is that the main characters are pretty firmly established, whereas back when SMB 1, 2 & 3 were new that wasn't the case, and things had to be worked out.
I love the perspective on this. Much nostalgia for me, those levels that seemed to having jumping and climbing forever.  FAVED!
This is brilliant. The perspective works perfectly. It's 2D and 3D at the same time.
